Purcell Family Portraits

September 28, 2008

We spent some time with the Purcell family during this wonderful fall heat wave for family portraits. One of their daughters contacted us to have family pictures done to commemorate the 25th anniversary of her parents. With 6 kids, the last 25 years have invariably been busy ones for the Purcells. We had a great time getting to know them and taking advantage of the beautiful light in Hawrelak park for their photos.

We’ve been looking forward to Amanda & Brady’s wedding since the winter when we met Amanda and her mom at Bridal Fantasy. This post could easily have been twice as long, there were so many cool shots to choose from. We picked our absolute favourites for you to see.

We did Amanda & Brady’s engagement photos on Brady’s family farm, so it was only fitting to have some of their wedding photos done at Amanda’s family farm. Amanda’s parents’ home was the perfect place to get ready; awesome decor, and bright open spaces.

This is great: Amanda sneaking into the church before the ceremony.

A cute moment between Amanda and her dad before heading down the aisle.

The ceremony was held at the beautiful Camrose United Church.

A new-age ritual when walking down the aisle – smile for the cameras!

This is an amazing time of year for photos – we’re nearing the end of the fall leaves and the weather is still beautiful. We got to use some awesome train tracks near Camrose.

CN even surprised us with a drive-by. Wicked!

OK, this was one of the coolest photo sessions yet. Amanda & Brady on a quad, and in us a golf cart – we headed down the looooong path to an old train trestle in Camrose. Just us, Amanda & Brady, magical lighting, and a gorgeous backdrop. These are some of our favourite shots of the year.

Not your typical wedding photo….

To show what a tremendous couple Amanda & Brady are, and that their wedding was all about the love between them, they requested no gifts. They asked instead for donations to the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation, in recognition of how breast cancer has touched their family. We made sure to do our part and donated to this wonderful cause at the reception.

Amanda and Brady built this Kissing Booth. Guests had to ring the triangle and do a kiss, and then Amanda and Brady had to mimic the kiss. For their entrance to the reception, Amanda & Brady’s showed everyone how it was done, and the bridal party all took a turn.

The reception was a ton of fun. Each of the groomsmen got awards from the bridesmaids, including ‘Best Practice Groom’ (from a childhood wedding ceremony), ‘Most Eligible Bachelor’ for Amanda’s brother, ‘Biggest Stud’ for Brady’s brother (so awesome)…..

…..and ‘Best Impersonation of the Groom’ for Brady’s twin brother and best man.

As always, we got some awesome reaction photos at the reception.

Congratulations Amanda & Brady! You and your families were so warm and wonderful to work with. It was a pleasure to spend your wedding day with you.

The last 5 weeks have been an amazing journey.  Our son has changed our life, strengthened our committment to each other, and given us joy we can’t express.  He’s got quite a personality already and keeps us very busy!  We’re happy to share a few of our photos.

He likes to look at himself in the mirror!

Ashley & Troy were married on a beautiful fall day.  With weather reports of snow for the next evening (that luckily didn’t materialize) we all basked in the glory of sunshine and turning leaves.  The ceremony was held at the beautiful St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Rolly View, Alberta, and the reception was in Calmar.  We took advantage of the awesome landscapes and farms of rural Alberta for some great photos.

Ashley’s dress was amazing!  There was a great bedroom in her parent’s home to use for the photos.

Love this shot of the invitation as Ashley’s getting her dress on.

And here’s Troy!

The church was incredible, and allowed us to get a lot of different angles and neat shots.  Here are some of them:

The outside of the church matched the uniqueness of the inside.  As we were driving to Ashley’s house for the getting ready photos, we passed by the church and thought ‘wouldn’t that be a cool one for photos?’. And it was. Check out that sky!

These two were the ringbearers.  Adorable!

Ashley and her girls, a barn, and some sun.  What more do you need?

We made sure to have plenty of time with Ashley & Troy alone.

There were lots of laughs at the reception.

Cheers!

A paparazzi-esque cake cutting. The cake was by Le Gateau

Not the first dance, but one of many more in their future.

Congratulations Ashley & Troy, and enjoy Phoenix!

You’ll remember Melissa And Jeff and their beautiful daughter Madison from their awesome Hawaiian wedding earlier this year.  They have another little girl on the way in a short time, and we met up with them in St. Albert for some maternity/family photos.  Can’t wait to meet the newest addition!

Yes, her shirt does say “Will sell husband for Chocolate” – look out Jeff!

Haley entertained Madison while I got photos of Melissa and Jeff alone.

Mike and Oriana’s wedding was great on so many levels. Mike and Haley went to grad school together, so it was special for us to be with friends on their wedding day. This was our first Italian wedding, the first wedding our son has been to (more on that later), and there were so many unique moments from the rings, to the dress, to the vows. An amazingly beautiful and intimate wedding.

Oriana’s bouquet was from Hole’s. Her only specifications were that the flowers had to be seasonal, and local. It was fantastic!

These are Oriana’s favourite shoes.

As I mentioned, the wedding rings were unique – we’ve never seen anything quite like Oriana’s ring.  Truly elegant.

Here is Mike and his best man Joe showing us their best ninja moves.  Umm….ninja moves?

More unique touches – Oriana had her brother Adrian stand up for her at the wedding.  Two best men, and a wonderful couple.  And check out that dress!  Amazing.  Definitely not your traditional white wedding dress, but she looks incredible, and captured every guests’ gaze at the wedding.  Stunning.

The University of Alberta is always a great place to go for wedding photos, with so much variety, beautiful architecture and landscaping.

The ceremony and reception were held at the Northern Bear Golf Club.  Mike and Oriana chose to have their photos done before the ceremony, and we had lots of time for some beautiful shots in the fall foliage.

As you may have gathered, Oriana is not your typical bride.  I would definitely call her a ‘bride-chilla’.  She wasn’t too interested in traditional, formal, posed photos (as you can gather from this next one).

Oriana’s dad, chilling in the golf cart during the photos.

The ceremony was held against the amazing backdrop of the golf course.  The ceremony was very intimate, with Mike and Oriana reciting their vows simultaneously.  The music was provided by an incredible harpist (highly recommended by us!), Keri Lynn Zwicker.  Keri Lynn is a harpist for the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra, and she and her partner Jeff Faragher really set the mood for the ceremony (and provided some funky tunes at the reception!)

I tried to capture a nice candid shot of guests at the reception, and I ended up with this….

Here’s the awesome harpist again. They played everything from the Beatles to AC/DC.

Since Mike and Oriana are friends of ours, they let us bring Andrew with us to the wedding, and we insisted they get this photo with him. His cool onesie reads ‘photo with baby 50¢’, and was a great baby gift from our friend and fellow photographer Kelsy. We didn’t charge them for it ;) .

Congratulations to you both, we couldn’t be happier for you.  We know you will have a wonderful life together.

We’ve been anticipating Shanna & Brett’s wedding for some time now. They’ve had two engagement sessions with us, and we were really looking forward to working with a couple with such a passion for pictures.  Shanna & Brett met 10 years ago, so this wedding has been a long time coming!  You can feel when you’re with them how much they truly love and respect each other.

This is going to be a huge post!  There is so much from this beautiful day that we want to share.

With 5 groomsmen, ushers, and dads, Brett’s room was very busy while he was getting ready!

Shanna has great taste in shoes.

One of the coolest things about being a wedding photographer is the opportunity to see all of the details that most of the guests never will. For instance: Shanna glued pennies to the bottom of her shoes – one for the year of their marriage, and one for each of their birth years. A tiny element to the day, but one that means so much.

All I can say is: WOW.

Shanna & Brett were married at the Alberta Legislature grounds in a beautiful outdoor ceremony.

Shanna had a huge veil (you’ll see more of it later) and I love how it looks in this first kiss photo (taken by our assistant Christy).

Two photographers = 2 perspectives.  Here’s the kiss from another angle!

This little guy is Brett’s nephew and a ‘ring bearer-in-training’.  Too cute.

Here’s a sample of our family ‘formals’….

We were blown away when going through all of the photos and found this one – Brett’s watch happened to catch the light just right!  Some people might fake this effect in Photoshop – we don’t have to!

See what I mean about the veil?  This was a fairy-tale wedding.

Shanna & Brett’s reception was at the Crowne Plaza downtown, an absolutely gorgeous reception location. Not one detail was missed for this wedding.  Shanna took courses and received her certificate in event planning and is aiming to become a wedding planner, and anyone who wants to get a hold of her can contact us and we’ll put you in touch with her.  We can’t wait to work with her!  She also found that it was a great help for her to have a planner for herself on her day and used Tanya Boyd as her day of planner.  You can contact Tanya at (780) 915-6617.

Raj from A Love Story (awesome viedographer!) did an intro video for Shanna & Brett’s entry to the reception modelled after the video that is played when the Edmonton Oilers go on to the ice.  You can see it in behind Shanna & Brett.  We’ve had a few themed weddings this summer, and they are SO much fun.  This reception had a hockey theme from the fun cake topper, to the guests having to score goals for the couple to kiss, to the groomsmen starting the wave!

I absolutely love this picture.  Quite the way to end a first dance!

Just as we were wrapping up, the DJ from Inifinite Events called for a ‘stroll’ (you know, you’ve all done it at some point, strutting your stuff down the line!), so we had to stay and get some shots.  Go Shanna!  That’s an awesome looking robot.

Congratulations Shanna & Brett – you are such a fun couple and we had a great time working with you. We can’t wait to get started on yrou album. Have fun in the Bahamas!
