Archive for July, 2009

We first met Rorik and Julia in Ottawa for their engagement session.  They came back to Edmonton for their summer wedding, on one of the hottest days of the year.

Rorik spent the last year preparing an incredible gift for his new wife.  He composed a song for her, and his father (who has an amazing voice) performed it during the ceremony.  I was moved to tears – the song was so beautiful, Rorik’s skill and talent is unparalleled.

I love this look between Julia and Rorik when she finds out what he has done for her.

We spent the very hot afternoon searching for cool, shady locations to beat the intense heat.

Julia & Rorik’s reception was all in the details.  They had planned everything so that everyone had fun!  Everything in the room made you look twice.

The chalice on the favour box and the cake (which I LOVE!!) was drawn by Rorik – made up of his and Julia’s profiles. These next few photos were taken by our assistant Raymond.

Check out this awesome menu!  On the other side is the mirror image.

What do you see in this one?

These are heart slinkies – how cute!

The reception was at the Royal Mayfair Golf Club, a fantastic location to sneak away for a few sunset photos.

Julia & Rorik performed a choreographed dance to the delight of the guests.

Congratulations you two!  Thank you so much for having us as a part of your day.

“Welcome to your scavenger hunt. To pass the game you will have to solve a series of clues I have thought of and find out where the secret locations are before reaching the final treasure.”

You might think that the longer we are in this business, the less emotion we feel at weddings and engagements, since we’ve seen it so many times before. On the contrary, the longer we do this, the more special each wedding feels – each glance, each touch, each kiss. Even more special are the unexpected moments we get to be a part of, like tonight when Deepak asked Poonam to marry him.

Deepak planned a scavenger hunt for Poonam at West Edmonton Mall. The clues led her to Booster Juice (where they first started dating),

Old Spaghetti Factory (where they once went on an interesting date),

Icing by Claire’s (where Poonam likes to buy her bling),

and then to the Ice Palace (she spotted me, but she had no idea what was up!) They have skated at Rockefeller Center together, and the Ice Palace was a good substitute.

Finally, Poonam skated to center ice, for one of the greatest moments of her life. Deepak presented her with this ring (isn’t it amazing?) and she very enthusiastically said yes!  There were people cheering all around the ice.

It’s easy to see how overjoyed Deepak was.

We spent some time exploring the mall as they enjoyed their first few moments as the newest engaged couple in Edmonton.

Here is an excerpt from one of the clues, which shows how deeply Deepak loves Poonam, “I can only imagine spending my life with you. I want to grow old with you and spend each and every day with you by my side”.

Why is baby Lucas so adorable? Just look at his parents! This beautiful boy arrived on Canada Day with much anticipation from the whole family. We are so happy to have a new nephew.

I love his hat – what a cute little man!

Normally we don’t put pictures of people’s bums on our website (they don’t tend to show up at many weddings!), but I love this little bum. I just want to squeeze it!  Baby bums, toes, and hands are so precious.

OK, so we all know the weather is hot right now, but do you know what’s hotter? Carrie & Nick. Seriously hot. You’ll see them again in September and judging by Carrie’s fashion sense it’s going to be fabulous.

We hope you enjoy these hot photos on a hot summer day.

I think Nick looks amazing here - he has such an incredible smile.

So many of you already know Sameera and Nitin, and what wonderful couple they are. Nitin’s proposal was a hot topic on the internet! If you missed it, you can read about it here.

We are so excited about their wedding this year, a melding of two hearts, two families, and two cities – we are going to Vancouver for part of the wedding!

Enjoy these engagement photos, and you’ll see more of these two next year.

When Jenny emailed to see if we ever come out to Vancouver for photography, I replied with a very excited ‘yes!’ We couldn’t have been happier at the idea of travelling to do engagement photography for Jenny and Bruce.

Jenny and Bruce have very busy careers as doctors in Vancouver. They have always loved walking around Vancouver together, especially the seawall area.

We also headed to the iconic Granville Market, another favourite spot of theirs.

This is my favourite photo of the shoot.

Thank you so much Jenny & Bruce, we hope you are having a lovely holiday, and we hope you can find an internet cafe somewhere to view these images. We had a great time visiting Vancouver, and enjoyed our afternoon with you.

PS: Thank you for recommending Sand Bar on Granville, we had a great lunch there!

Clayton & Carly’s wedding day was perfect.  Their garden wedding at the Devonian Botanical Gardens was beautiful, I loved watching their faces during the ceremony – stealing little glances at each other, and smiling.  A lot of smiling.

I love Michael’s patience with photography.  He waits, and sets up the perfect shot. This one of Carly walking up the aisle is a perfect example. He saw exactly what he wanted to do, and got it just at the right time.  Sometimes the person second shooting (him in this case) comes up with the most amazing photo.

The Devonian Gardens are a great place for anyone who wants to incorporate nature into their ceremony.  The setting is stunning.

Now, I love Michael’s work, but we’re a bit competitive sometimes, and I have to say I love this next image (mine!).  I was taking portraits of Carly looking straight in the lens. I wanted a great expression on her face, so I asked her to think back to her first date with Clayton. <click>. I don’t know what her eyes are saying, but at this moment she is looking at him and thinking about their first date. It’s such a pure expression, and she looks amazing.

We found this awesome bridge just outside Devon.

Bling!

The reception was at the Sunridge Ski Area.  It was a really cool location, and we’d never been before, which was a bonus!

I love receptions.  It’s so cool for us to see photos from when they were young or first dating, and to hear funny stories about them (like how Carly just got her driver’s licence last month!).  We had a blast at this reception.  Carly & Clayton have warm and loving families, and an awesome group of friends.

Thank you two so much for having us, can’t wait for you to see these photos!

It is a wonderful time for engagement photos – the weather is beautiful, and the colours in the trees pop. I met Aman & Ajit at the Royal Alberta Museum for a warm summer evening session.

If there’s one word I can use to describe Daniela & Daniel’s wedding, it would be ‘elegant’. The wedding was simple and low-key, but absolutely elegant. The red and white theme was perfect following Canada Day!

We had never been to a wedding at the Holiday Inn Express Downtown, but it was a beautiful venue. The penthouse of the hotel has windows on three sides, letting natural light spill in. Especially with Edmonton’s long days, the beautiful light streamed in long into the reception.

Here is our take on Daniela coming up the aisle. Changing your perspective can make some pretty powerful images.

We enjoyed working with Comissioner William Medak again.

We were lucky to be heading to the Legislature on a Sunday – we had the whole place to ourselves!

This bridal party was awesome. Jason and Jeptha (2 Js), Chloe and Chelsea (2 Cs) and Daniela and Daniel (2 Ds). How cool! They loved getting their pictures taken, and taking pictures themselves.

Daniela & Daniel love nature, and a theme throughout the wedding and the speeches was respecting and remarking in the world that God has created around us. We took all of their photos in nature, and I especially love the photo of their rings, symbolizing their love of nature and each other.

As we were taking these photos, we made a comment about the family canoeing nearby and that we would wait for them to pass – Daniel and Daniela told us they were actually given a canoe as a wedding present, so we changed our plan and made sure to get the canoe in the frame!

Daniela & Daniel, we hope you have a wonderful time on the West Coast, and we look forward to sharing these photos with you when you return.

We have been looking forward to Shauntel and Jason’s wedding for so long! When we first met them, they described what they wanted to do for their wedding, and it sounded like an amazing day. It was even better than we imagined.

This is my favourite getting ready picture of the year.

St. Jean Baptiste Church in Morinville looks like the kind of grand church you would find in a much larger and much older city. It was incredible.

It was Jason’s dream to go biking in a skate park at his wedding. We loved the idea, and also that Jason was so into the photos. We love these shots. He is incredibly skilled (and it was tough to get him to stop biking around for the photos!).  The last image took Michael a lot of work to conceptualize, shoot, and process, but it was SO worth it – Jason, I expect that to be your Facebook profile!

Shauntel and Jason had such a fun bridal party. We really enjoyed spending the day with them.

Shauntel’s sister is expecting, and we did the fastest mini-maternity session ever for her.  She’s one hot mom-to-be!

It rained pretty hard, but we found some refuge. I’ve heard it’s good luck to have rain on your wedding day, so Shauntel and Jason must be the luckiest couple in the world.

The shoe game is much more fun with shoes like theirs!

Shauntel and Jason – you had our ideal kind of wedding. Lighthearted, stress free, and all about the two of you. Congratulations!
