Ready?

I don’t use the word ‘epic’ very often, but this wedding certainly was. What I loved so much about Poonam & Deepak’s wedding is that although it was packed with guests, had many many days of events, and a team of vendors involved along the way, the wedding actually felt very intimate. It was all about Poonam & Deepak and their families, and ensuring all of the guests had a fantastic, glamorous time.

We’ll start with the week of pre-wedding events. Poonam’s family hosted a sangeet/mixer party at the Maharaja Banquet Hall.

Guests were wowed by the dance moves of Harman B!

Deepak’s side also had a small mixer party at their gorgeous house.

Poonam had several ceremonies prior to the wedding, including maiyan (turmeric paste), mehndi, and chura (wedding bangles).

During the chura ceremony, the priest explained that this was the last ceremony that Poonam would have with her family, and that from that moment on she would begin to be a part of Deepak’s family. It was really emotional, and very obvious how much Poonam loves her family.

I love this sweetness between Poonam and her Dad.

From all of the Vatna ceremonies we’ve seen, we know that it’s tradition for the groom’s family and friends to take advantage of the groom a bit – take Deepak’s brother-in-law, who spread a bunch of the cold paste down under his shirt, and the groomsmen…well…you can see what they got up to.

Edmonton makeup artist Sonia Sajnani helped Poonam look flawless on her wedding day.

Is Michael considering a career change? We have a lot of experience with Indian weddings and he’s becoming an expert on attaching the sehra. According to one of the guests at the wedding, since Michael attached the sehra he is now Deepak’s brother…

I think he did a pretty good job!

The Hindu ceremony was full of laughs, these two are super cute together.

So here’s a tip for all of our couples. Ummm…remember to get your marriage licence before the wedding. But if you forget, you can always go get one on the day. Just remember to bring along your photographer, and a good friend who can pay for it if you forget to bring your wallet.

And back to the Mandir where Deepak pays to get his shoes back.

Some alone time.

In the last few ceremonies of the wedding day, Poonam leaves her family home and joins Deepak’s family. Not too sure what’s going on here…that’s Poonam’s brother so I think Deepak might want to get his eyesight checked.

After this game at Deepak’s house, I think Poonam wears the pants now.

I’m so excited about this set of portraits, the light was beautiful, Deepak & Poonam were so relaxed and happy. A perfect way to start the reception.

The reception at the Mirage was stunning, and their lighting on the dance floor made all the difference.

This is just a sneak peek at the reception – you can find more crazy party pictures on the Shandro Photo Facebook Page!

Deepak & Poonam – thank you for bringing us along for your romance, from the proposal to the wedding day. We’d enjoyed having you get to know our family, and being so terrific to work with.

I love the idea of an engagement party – a chance to celebrate your forthcoming marriage with all of your family and friends! And when your cousin is a fabulous wedding planner (Maria of Flawless By Maria) and her family used to own the restaurant (Sherwood Grill in Sherwood Park) it’s easy to put together an awesome bash.

Here are Michelle & Tim with Maria and her husband.

Tim gave a touching speech.

One thing we’ve learned – the Greeks know how to party!! I can’t wait to see all the dancing at the wedding!

Michael got to share some great news recently about winning an award, now it’s my turn.  This year I was fortunate enough to be published in two magazines!

Sonya & Amrik‘s wedding was featured in South Asian Bride (a magazine originally started in the US, and now available in Canada at Chapters), and Michelle & Greg‘s wedding was featured in Blush (a local Edmonton magazine).  We have also been featured recently and in the past year on a few wedding blogs, with more to come this year.

Also, I just got my first magazine cover!  It’s not the type of magazine you’d expect though…Canadian Scrapbooker Magazine asked me to use a photo from Amita & Abhee‘s luxurious cruise destination wedding in for their summer cover.

C & M’s love story left me awe-struck. It was a story spanning years, involving re-connection on Facebook, thousands of miles, a proposal in Bali and a true love that was meant to be. We had a wonderful time at this early spring wedding, which started with a first glance at the Fairmont Hotel MacDonald.

This was the first time we had photographed a ceremony at Rutherford House. It was a fantastic location for an intimate ceremony.

Congratulations C & M!

In the last few months we have seen several of our wedding couples welcome babies or become pregnant, and we find a lot of joy in watching these new families grow.

When Michael visited Laura & Joe for their maternity session, he was overjoyed to see their wedding album on proud display!

Laura & Joe are both adorable, so it’s no wonder they made an adorable baby. And I was thrilled to have Laura as a newborn client – she is a talented mama and handmade these sweet hats for her daughter, I was lucky to play with a few of them during the newborn session!

Congratulations Laura & Joe! You are already amazing parents, and we’re going to enjoy watching your little girl grow up.

We are extremely excited and proud to announce that Michael has won the Best Wedding Portrait of 2011 in the National Image Competition of the Professional Photographers of Canada!

And here is the multi-award winning image of Stephanie and Branden, entitled ‘Hot Water’:

I know many of you have seen this image before, it also won an award from Bride.ca, and is in one of our sample albums in the studio.

Here is Michael accepting his award at the convention in Banff.

This trophy means that we have officially started a ‘collection’ – it has a special place next to the award he won last year for best Wedding Photojournalistic Portrait.

In addition to this amazing award, Michael’s other images did very well in the competition. Here is an explanation of how the competitions work:

There are three levels of placement: Accepted, Merit, and Excellence. The vast majority of images that people submit are not accepted. Some are accepted, few are merit, and a handful of images are judged excellent each year. Each photographer is allowed to enter up to 4 images in different categories and an album.

Here is a summary of how each image fared at the national and provincial level this year.

‘Hot Water’ received a score of Accepted at the provincial level, Merit at the national level, Best in Class for Wedding Portrait, and also received the honour of being selected for the National Loan Collection.

‘Oy Vey!’ received a score of Accepted at the national level.

‘Looking In’ received a score of Merit at the national level. The wedding album from Chelsea & Alistair’s wedding also received a score of Accepted at both the provincial and national level.

We can’t wait to see what our 2011 wedding season holds!
