Shelby & John’s wedding took place on a beautiful summer day, which was good because they had an outdoor ceremony. In Edmonton that’s always a risk since the weather is so unpredictable, but we were lucky enough to have a beautiful warm sunny day for them. Not that I don’t love wedding photography in the rain…but…

If you’re a fan of our Facebook page (and if not, why aren’t you yet?) you will have seen a sneak peek of this beautiful wedding, and now here is the whole story for you.

Florals: The Wild Orchid
Hair: Shelby’s sister
Makeup: Sephora
Ceremony: Rutherford House
Reception: Continental Treat

Shelby & John opted for a first look at the Mettera hotel on Whyte Ave, where Shelby got ready.

Shelby gifted John this beautiful Gibson guitar as a wedding present. I can’t show you a few of the photos that Bruce took of John with his guitar.  Let’s just say he has a sense of humour. Shelby & John met in high school but didn’t start dating until they connected in University, when Shelby saw John playing guitar with his band.

Shelby’s bouquet incorporated beading from John’s great grandmother’s wedding – they share a wedding anniversary as his great grandparents were married exactly 100 years earlier!

The intimate ceremony was followed by a fun reception at Continental Treat restaurant on Whyte Ave.  We used to live right across the street but never went in. It always looked good, so I was glad to have a chance to try it out!  The atmosphere the whole night felt like a fun cocktail party.

Candice & Vi – Married

June 26, 2012

Candice and Vi recently celebrated their wedding in the Dominican Republic, but had a second celebration with family and friends in Edmonton, and chose us to photograph their events here.  Their special day was filled with tea ceremonies, (a little summer rain), some hilarious games, and a wonderful 10 course Chinese dinner.

Vi spent some quality time with his groomsmen when he arrived at Candice’s house to greet her in the morning.

Congratulations Candice & Vi! And thanks to Melissa for helping out at the reception.

I’m really looking forward to Bobbi Jo & Mike’s wedding at the Northern Bear Golf Club later this summer!  I spent a beautiful summer evening with them, and loved photographing them.  It’s always fun reconnecting with couples months after they book me for their wedding.

People sometimes ask us how we get such vibrant colour in our photos. It’s a little bit to do with our gear, a bit to do with our processing, but mostly due to mother nature – she gives us such breathtaking backgrounds to work with!

Jacquie & Justin

June 21, 2012

Wedding Obsession | Canadian wedding inspiration

There were many elements of Jacquie & Justin’s wedding that made it a soft and romantic affair.  Jacquie & Justin are two of the sweetest people you’ll ever meet, and the joining of these two also joined two large families!  The joy of both families at this union was incredible, and the reception was full of lovely warm words about both Jacquie and Justin and their accomplishments and ambitions.  I’d keep an eye on these two! There’s no telling where their successes will lead them.

The church where Jacquie & Justin were married was very special to them as Jacquie’s family has a long history of being married there!

A great shot by Bruce before the ceremony begins.

I’ve been hanging on to this gorgeous wedding for a while, and now that it’s been published by Blush Magazine I can share it with you! (Watch out, this is a big post!)

Christine knew exactly what she wanted for her dream wedding at the Fairmont Hotel Macdonald and with the help of Michelle from Behind the Scenes Events, everything came together for her and Dan this past November.  Amazing details like Christine’s custom brooch bouquet and high heel centerpieces created an elegant and creative atmosphere. The Wedgewood Room at the Hotel Macdonald was the perfect backdrop for both the ceremony and reception. Check out their feature on the Blush Magazine Blog to read more about their wedding planning!

{Custom Couture Wedding Gowns}

Author: Haley Shandro

This week we have an interview with the fabulous Lani van Rooyen of ROOY Couture, a local couture dress designer, and I asked her a few questions about custom gowns as an option for Edmonton brides. I’ve personally photographed her gorgeous creations, and also had the great fortune of attending her fashion show last year and was blown away by her creativity.

Why should a bride choose a custom gown instead of going to a bridal store or boutique?
Custom gowns are ideal for those brides looking for something different, who perhaps have shopped extensively without any success, or would like something more unique than what is generally available.  Having your gown custom designed creates the opportunity for combining design elements that might not be found together in a gown off the rack, adding personal touches as well as a good fit, as patterns are done individually.  In addition, it is also a much more personalized experience with advice and insights focused on the bride and her gown through the entire process.

What is your price range for gowns?
R O O Y Couture gown prices are calculated based on fabrics chosen and detailing, with most of our gowns ranging being between $2500 and $4000.

How do you help brides create their dream gown?
During the initial and design meetings, I spend several hours with each bride discussing various aspects of her wedding plans, location and her ideas for her gown.  We look at a range of fabrics which would be suitable, and by listening to her dreams and needs the gown design slowly begins to take shape.  Working from head to toe, I would give several alternatives with pro’s and con’s to each design element as we work towards the ideal gown, all coming together in a design which is individually hers and suited to her figure, taste and requirements.

I noticed on your website that you offer gown rental, can you tell me a bit more about that?
R O O Y Couture holds a small collection of gowns created for fashion shows and photoshoots which are available for rental.  We also occasionally assist brides who are also interested in having a gown custom designed for rental rather than purchase.

Do you have a favourite material or style?
Style – not at all – I love designing in different styles dependent on the different brides I meet.  Fabric – I’m a very big fan of silks – it is both luxurious and stylish, simply beautiful!

What are the current trends in bridal style?
Globally we are seeing much in the area of lace, sheer covered shoulders and sleeves, with some soft colors added to the traditional palette, and simpler lines in generally smaller skirts.  Locally these trends will take some time to arrive, although we’re definitely seeing more lace than in previous years.  Strapless gowns are still very popular, as are various styles of gown skirts.

Anything else that you would find helpful for brides?
Let whichever bridal gown you decide on truly represent who you are ~ this will let you shine through, leaving you filled with excitement leading up to and joy on your big day.

Thank you so much for sharing with us Lani!  You can see more of the beautiful dress we featured today here.

Edmonton wedding dress boutique

Well, this week’s post isn’t about gowns, but we can’t help ourselves…If you came to visit last week, you were introduced to Delica Bridal, one of our favourite local bridal boutiques. We’d like to wish Delica a very happy first anniversary and share with you a very special promotion. Delica is giving away a complimentary Sara Gabriel veil with the purchase of your bridal gown — how perfect?! Some of the gowns available at Delica were also seen on yesterday’s NBC’s Today show with special guest Randy Fenoli!

Edmonton wedding planner decor

Undoubtedly, after becoming engaged, one of the first things that a bride will think about is her wedding dress. She will then dream about her wedding and formulate a vision of what her dream wedding will be. Then, of course, reality will set in and the not so fun part of planning will need to be discussed; the budget, the guest list…One of the first things to do though, before you can really complete any planning is to determine your wedding style. Do you know what your wedding style is? Will you have a modern or classic wedding, a vintage or rustic wedding, or an indoor or outdoor wedding? Will you incorporate the crisp colour tangerine? After all, it is the colour of the year. Can’t decide? Weddingbells Magazine has a quiz that may inspire you…or at least get you thinking.

The key is to take inspiration from everywhere, not just wedding magazines, books, and websites, but also from your day to day life. Do you and your fiancé have a favourite song or poem? Or, possibly a favourite activity or place that you’ve travelled to? As a designer, of course there are some elements that I often see repeatedly i.e. chair covers, but I always enforce that my clients should incorporate unique elements of them as a couple in the design of their wedding. Your guests should walk into your reception and say “oh, wow, this is so _____ & _____” — they should not be able to place any couple into the wedding, it should be your wedding!

Edmonton wedding reception decor ceremony

When you think of your dream wedding, you likely won’t have your budget in mind, but when finding your inspiration that is completely okay. Become inspired by the opulent floral designs of Preston Bailey and the towering cake masterpieces by Sylvia Weinstock, but then bring it back to reality — how can you incorporate elements of your inspirations while using your budget? When my clients and I design and plan their weddings, we quote the dream (albeit the realistic version of their dream) and then pull it back to something that best suits their budget. After all, you’re only willing to spend so much on one day. Your wedding should be one of the most magical and special days of your life, but you also have a lifetime together to look forward to.

What are you inspired by? Feel free to comment, as we’d love to hear!
