Congratulations to our Grand Prize winners: The Hopkins Family! This lucky family has so many supporters around the globe, and we’re pleased to award them a free photo session, a 24×36 canvas, and 2 11×14 prints!

The other families in our contest are so deserving that we can’t stop there. So, for our runners up, the Neppers, we have a free photo session and an 11×14 prints!

In third place, the Van Burens will receive a free session and 8×10 prints.

Our other finalists will all receive a free session with us. We can’t wait to share their family sessions on our blog!

Thank you to everyone who participated in the contest!

We had SO many entries and it was SO hard to choose the finalists for our free family photography contest, so we’re presenting you with 6 finalists.  It was just way too hard.  We want to thank all of our contestants for entering.

Just a reminder of the prize:  A complimentary family photography session with us, a 24×36 canvas, and 2 11×14 prints (over $1100 value!)

Without further ado…here are your finalists (in no particular order).  Please vote at the bottom of the post for the family you feel most deserves free family photography from Shandro Photo.

#1 Nepper Family

This family was nominated by their friend Jennifer.  We were touched by the story of Holly Nepper, an eco-conscious mom (who uses cloth diapers like us!) and her husband Rob who work way too hard and need this prize to spend some family time together and celebrate their beautiful family.  One of their children has needed to be treated at the Stollery Children’s Hospital, which is something we support as well.  Jennifer spoke very highly of the impact the Nepper’s friendship has made on her life.

#2 Vanwart Family

This sweet engaged couple recently added a member to their family: puppy Paisley!  They have never had professional photos done, and would love to have family photos of their new little family.  I love that Breanne entered the contest because families come in all shapes and sizes, and theirs is a great example.

#3 Elliott Morrison Family

This is one busy little family!  Mom and Dad are high school sweethearts who have been together 15 years. They have devoted their time to their two children, and are soon going to take time out of their busy schedules to plan an intimate wedding for the two of them.  They would love to have a family portrait to send to family friends after their wedding, and they have no family portraits of all of them together.

#4 Van Buren Family

We met Stirling and his beautiful fiance and daughter at his brother Foster’s wedding this May.  This family was nominated by Foster’s wife Amanda.  Stirling works very hard in Fort MacMurray.  Being away from his family is challenging and they have no photos of the entire family together.  Especially when long distance is a factor, it would be great for this family to have professional photos to enjoy while they’re apart.

#5 Hopkins Family

Lindsey and her husband need family photos to make sure they can cherish the moments of their son’s life.  They don’t want to miss this important stage in their family life and let their son’s childhood go by without some beautiful pictures of the three of them together.

#6 Craig Family

The Craig family was nominated by their friend Kerry.  This family hasn’t had family photos for 10 years, and now their daughters are both teenagers.  It’s time for an up to date photo of this family. Kerry couldn’t say enough about what a warm and fun family the Craig’s are.  They have extended family across the country, and it would be great for them to have photos to share with their family.

Please vote below. You can only vote once per household. The polling closes on Thursday, July 1st, at 11:59pm.

I love contests. (I never win, but I love them.) So we’re going to have a big one!

Here are the details:

The prize: A complimentary family photography session with us, a 24×36 canvas, and 2 11×14 prints (over $1100 value – that’s huge!)

How to enter: Email info@shandrokids.com.  To enter, simply tell us why you need family photos, why you should win the prize, and include a picture of your family.

The contest: We will pick the top three entries, our blog readers, will vote for the winner!

The deadlines: Entries will be accepted until 11:59 pm on June 15th, and the winners will be announced on June 23rd (my birthday!)

Who knows, maybe you too will end up on our studio wall someday!

And finally, a couple of announcements:

As most of you have gathered, we are celebrating the grand opening of our studio this month!  It’s pretty perfect timing – we started Shandro Kids one year ago. At that time we pledged to donate a percentage of our profits from Shandro Kids to the Stollery Children’s Hospital. Thanks to the wonderful babies, kids, and families that we worked with over the past year, we donated $250 to the Stollery.

We’d like to thank the following sponsors for donating fantastic prizes for our Grand Opening:

Zaika Bistro, Stella & Dot Jewellery (Stylist Lesley Johnston-Woo), J’Adore Dance, Studio Bloom, Mommy Connections, Jacqueline Laine Makeup (jax_laine@hotmail.com), Photography Concentrate

The first reaction we have to the huge canvas on our wall is usually: ‘wow, that’s hot!’

The second reaction is ‘how on earth could she do that to her dress?’

So, in the interest of public education, we are here to tell you that after her Trash the Dress session, Stephanie’s wedding dress was far from trashed. She took it to a drycleaner (which she was planning to do anyway) and it came out perfectly clean. So if you’re worried about how your dress will fare on the wedding day or anything you might be brave enough to do with it afterwards, rest assured it will be just fine.

Art Gallery of Alberta

May 31, 2010

Before I post Laura & Joe’s wedding (on the way soon!) I wanted to devote a quick post to the new Art Gallery of Alberta.  We visited after it opened, and on the first visit we decided to get a family membership.  We were so impressed by the unique architecture of the building, and the quality of exhibits that we knew we’d be back.  As an added bonus, the Art Gallery is available for weddings, and I would suggest brides consider the AGA as an option for indoor photography as a back-up if it’s raining, or a gorgeous building for urban photography.  We had the opportunity to work there for Laura & Joe’s wedding and we can’t wait to go back.

Andrew really enjoyed the children’s area.

Last night we hosted a party for friends, family, colleagues and neighbours at our newly opened home studio in Terwillegar Gardens. We’ve been in the neighbourhood for a year and a half, and absolutely love it. Over the past few months we’ve transformed our basement into a portrait studio/office and it’s finally finished! We’ve posted a few images of the construction and now here is the finished studio.

(Note – the yellow hose is for a fireplace – coming soon!)

This is our new office space, it’s been great working down here.

And…here we are all set up for the party!  We had over 120 guests attend and it was so great to see everyone networking.

All of our decor was from Special Event Rentals, and I’d like to personally thank Kristina for helping me style the event and design these awesome centerpieces.

Ken & Ailynn of Whimsical Cake Studio designed us a delicious sweets buffet, complete with a custom Shandro Photo cake, and cookies for every guest!  These two have a beautiful shop in Garneau, and do incredible custom work.  They are available for weddings and other functions…or if you just need a quick cupcake fix!

These beautiful place cards were designed by Pink Polka Design.

We wouldn’t have been able to accomplish any of this without our families.  We are so lucky to live close to our parents on both sides, and to Michael’s sisters.  Everyone has helped out by watching Andrew, giving advice and support, and helping set up yesterday.  We appreciate everyone’s help!

So you might notice that it’s been a bit quiet on the blog lately. If you think that means we’ve been super busy, you’re right! In the past little while we’ve moved into our new studio, jetted to Mexico for a fabulous destination wedding, built a playyard in our backyard for Andrew, and had tons of photo shoots. All of this is coming your way soon, and I’ll leave you with a peek at Stephanie & Branden’s Mayan Riviera wedding – much more is on the way soon, I promise!

Edmonton destination wedding photographers

Spring is finally here, and wedding season is almost upon us!

We have some amazing events coming up this year, including the Grand Opening of our studio on May 27th (watch your inboxes for invites), a ton of amazing couples we’re working with, and a few exciting projects that will be unveiled soon.

How are we going to accomplish all of this? That’s a good question. For the first year, we’ve decided to extend a special opportunity to a photography student, or new photographer who is interested in working with Shandro Photo. We are opening a part-time intern position with the studio for the summer.

Please note that this is a part-time, flexible, unpaid position.  Proficiency in Photoshop is a must!  In exchange for your hard work you will have the opportunity to learn business and photography from a successful Edmonton photography studio.

If you are interested in applying for the intership, please email info@shandrophoto.com with your cv and the subject line ‘Summer with the Shandros’.  Application deadline is May 15th.

We were absolutely delighted to welcome many of Edmonton’s amazing wedding planners (and a few other special guests) into our home studio to teach them about how to take better photos of their work.

As photographers, our time is spent primarily with our couples, exploring emotions and light while incredible wedding planners assemble and style gorgeous table-scapes and reception decor. We don’t always get a chance to capture the decor undisturbed, and it’s great for planners to have the tools to create beautiful images of their own work.

Special thanks to Julianne Cragg of A Modern Proposal for providing us the amazing table-scape to practice on.

Our portrait studio and new office is nearing completion.  It’s hard to believe how far it has come!  All that is left to be done is the doors, trim, and bathroom tiles.

The job is being done through the company Direct Contracting. The guy in the doorway is our carpenter, Curtis Hnidan.  He and his father Les have done most of the work; the framing, drywall, ceiling, flooring, painting, and (soon) the finishing.  If you are looking for someone to do a project for you I highly recommend Direct Contracting.

Curtis’ father Les has been working on the project with him.

The flooring has really changed the look of the room.

We outfitted the studio and office with LED potlights.  They will last 12-20 years without having to change them.  Also, they are environmentally friendly since they use about 1/16 the power of a regular lightbulb!

The next set of pictures will be coming soon and they will be of the finished studio!  We can’t wait to take pictures in it.
