Michael had a great time with Zeb & Aniqa on the week of their wedding, starting with an urban engagement session in downtown Edmonton. Aniqa is from Charlottetown and only arrived in Edmonton a few days before the wedding.
Zeb & Aniqa are very sweet together, and were easy to photograph. Their wedding involved family members and friends of a lot of weddings that we have shot or will be doing soon! Michael enjoyed swapping stories with the guests that he knew there.
Thanks to awesome second shooter Andrea!
Zeb told Michael that he wanted something completely different from what he’d ever seen before so together they came up with this image. Michael was precariously perched on a staircase holding his flash in a very tight spot to accomplish it!
You’ll see a lot more of Mehvash & Saad on the blog soon! We have a fall engagement session coming up, and their wedding next March. This summer they celebrated their Nikkah ceremony, (and Michael recently shot Mehvash’s brother Zeb’s wedding, which you’ll see soon as well!) It’s always fantastic to work with members of the same family, and we loved seeing so many familiar faces.
Thanks to my second shooter Sam for his help on this one – we had to chase the light down a bit for the portraits, and we all really had to hustle!
Fahreen & Howie are a really awesome couple. She is tiny but tough, and known by her nieces as being really fun. Howie is quite and unassuming, until he starts to party! They are both well accomplished, and Howie is even in the Alberta Sports Hall of Fame! He was captain of the Golden Bears hockey team in the late 80s and currently coaches the Pandas.
Fahreen came in to her first meeting with me with her friend Shairose. The two are inseparable! Shairose helped plan the whole wedding for Fahreen and Howie! These two had a beautiful Muslim ceremony at the Oasis Centre in Edmonton.
Thanks second shooters Carmen & Wil!
Fahreen’s family and friends really loaded her up with sweets and lotion to prepare her for the wedding!
Howie’s sister bestowed blessings on the couple as they began the reception.
When Michael asked Fahreen about what locations they envisioned for their wedding photos, she mentioned that Howie loves the 50s, so this retro diner was a perfect fit!
As seen on:
While most Edmontonians were cursing mother nature at the end of March, Alisha was thanking her for all the snow. And her dream of a Rocky Mountain fairy tale wedding came true!
The festivities started with a pre-wedding party, with Inaayat’s family bringing gifts to Alisha, and Alisha’s family offering her blessings for her wedding day.
The following day, Alisha & Inaayat celebrated their traditional Muslim wedding ceremony in Edmonton.
Then we all headed down to Canmore for the reception! The weather was beautiful, and we managed to find a few remnants of winter. Thanks to my awesome second shooter Tessa for some of these shots! (And thanks to Lanny for driving me around to look at a few different spots). As wedding photographers from Edmonton, we love getting out around the world (even close to home) and looking for new locations to work in.
Vera Wang wedding shoes!
The reception was at Silvertip Resort in Canmore.
The Muslim wedding reception begins with a few traditional ceremonies, including determining who wears the pants in the relationship, and presenting gifts to the brothers (including a signed Messier print and trip to Boston!) Both Alisha & Inaayat have close relationships with their families, and throughout the night it was easy to see how much they are loved and supported. Hearing Alisha’s twin brother’s toast to her was especially touching.
You’ve seen a few posts about Shaira & Aly on the blog. From their engagement last year, to a fall portrait session, and now finally their wedding, I’ve loved spending time with these two and their families.
I know they say that opposites attract, but when it comes to our couples I think the opposite is true – the couples we work with seem to have the same fun and quirky personalities as us, which usually makes for a pretty entertaining wedding day. Shaira & Aly currently live in Toronto, but if Shaira has anything to do with it they’ll eventually move back to her hometown of Edmonton.
I started the week with Shaira’s mehndi.
After a few more events it was on to the wedding day! Christy and the guys prepped in west Edmonton, and then Aly came to pick up Shaira from her parents home.
We headed to the U of A for a few photos before the ceremony.
The Muslim wedding ceremony involves signing a marriage contract, the recitation of the Nikah, and the placement of rings on the couples fingers by the officiants.
After the ceremony, Shaira & Aly had a quick clothing change, and went on to the reception at the Derrick. Check out their unique favour idea – they were a hot commodity at the wedding!
A few games kicked off the reception – the coins that Shaira collects represents fertility (I’m sure her mom won’t mind a few grandkids!), and her brother Rahim was the proud recipient of a custom bobble-head doll among some other gifts.
The Derrick presented an amazing patio buffet for the reception.
Divinity Productions got the party started!
Congratulations Shaira & Aly! We need to have another photo shoot in a few months or I’m going to into withdrawl. Thanks to Christy for shooting with me and a few of the photos in this post.
I was there when Shaira & Aly were engaged among family and friends, and they traveled from Toronto for their engagement session this spring. They got to experience first hand my style of photography which I’m increasingly thinking of as ‘ooh, shiny!’ We had something else in mind for the shoot but construction completely changed my plans. So I wandered around looking for new and exciting shooting opportunities and literally squealed when I found a couple of cool locations. It just goes to show that no matter how much you may want to plan for a shoot, photographers have to be adaptable, the conditions may not be what you expect!
Shaira paid me a great compliment in an email, and told me something that I’ve since added to our ‘about us’ section. She said that she loves the way we ‘play with nature’. I LOVE that sentiment, because it’s exactly what we like to do, and I couldn’t have put it better myself.
Shaira & Aly – a pleasure as always. See you for your wedding in July!
I clicked with Farzana & Aly right away. We had a great conference call, they wanted to snuggle my little ones when they came over, and we bonded over bug spray during their engagement session. I’m looking forward to their wedding coming up at the end of the month!
And, Farzana is a girl after my own heart (ie, a fellow shorty). She’s so cute!!
