I’ve actually been lucky to have seen Joanne and Colin so often before their wedding – they did all of their wedding planning from their home in Lethbridge, but made . Those of you who have been through the wedding planning process will understand how difficult that must have been. When the wedding day arrived, you’d never have known – every detail was perfect. And Colin…I have to say a quick word about Colin. Joanne had the wedding of her dreams, complete with pink everything. Colin is an awesome husband, any man who can rock a pink wedding is a true man in my opinion.

The Robertson-Wesley United Church in downtown Edmonton is a beautiful ceremony location.

After the ceremony, we took a quick trip downtown for photos. I’ve got to say, I’m pretty excited about this group shot.

I asked Christy to get a ring shot, I had the idea that she might be able to get a reflection of the rings in the puddle. She did get the shot that I wanted, but also got this one, which I love as well.

Joanne’s dad’s acreage in Sherwood Park has an amazing backyard, that would rival the Devonian Gardens.

This was my first time at a function at the Snow Valley Ski Club. The room was transformed for the wedding and the food was fantastic! I’d love to go back for a wedding.

Congratulations Joanne & Colin!

We’ve grown very close to Nitu & Jessie over the last several years, seeing them at various weddings and other events, and being with them along the way for their engagement and wedding planning. They were there for us when my dad passed away this year, and when Nitu’s grandmother passed away several days before the wedding our hearts broke for them. We immediately printed up copies of photos of her we had taken from their engagement party, and did all we could to support Nitu during such a hard time. Despite the sad news, Nitu & Jessie’s wedding was a joyous event, and both families were so happy to celebrate the union. As you have probably seen from their engagement sessions we posted recently, Nitu & Jessie are an adorable couple, with a wicked sense of humour.

Soon we’ll be having dinner and drinks and giving them a preview disc of their images, but for now here is a taste of their wedding day and reception.

Our second-shooter Raymond got to see his first turban construction.

Nitu had beautiful touches of blue in her wedding lengha.

I’m waiting for our first Western wedding with a 27 person bridal party but I don’t think it’s going to happen…

This is so cheesy, and so Bollywood, but somehow it just works.

Jessie is a soccer fanatic, in fact he injured his foot a few days before the wedding playing soccer, so going to Foote field for photos on his wedding day was a must.

His passion was also a weakness during the doli, the bridesmaids used it as a part of their negotiations for more money to release Nitu to Jessie.

There’s usually barely any room for us to stand during the doli. Raymond was on the fence about shooting this one….literally!

Jessie applies sindoor (red powder) to Nitu’s forehead to signify her status as a married woman.

On the reception day, Michael and I had a blast partying with everyone. We picked Nitu & Jessie up at their hotel, and whisked them away for some photos before the reception.

Finally, Nitu is the same height as Jessie!

The reception at Maharaja Banquet Hall was beautifully decorated. Check out this amazing entrance decor!

And the cake with special lighting touches looked beautiful.

Jessie’s uncle, Edmonton City Councillor Amarjeet Sohi, had some words of wisdom for the couple.

Following an energetic dance performance, the party really got started! After we were done taking pictures, I took all of the gear home, and Michael stayed an partied…and got home at 3 am. I think he had a good time!

UPDATE: Nitu & Jessie’s wedding has been featured on the wedding blog ‘Red White and Diamonds’! You can see more images, including pre-wedding events (and a special appearance by Spongebob) on Red, White, and Diamonds.

Michael almost didn’t shoot LeAnne & Brody’s wedding. Here’s what happened.

Michael did engagement photos for LeAnne and Brody last year. At the time, they hadn’t really started to plan the wedding, but wanted some beautiful photos to share their news with the world. When it came time to plan, a family friend graciously offered to do their wedding photos for them. It was a friend who is a great photographer, but not a professional wedding photographer by trade. After reading an article that I wrote about the benefits of hiring a professional wedding photographer, LeAnne called, hoping that we still had her date available. She said that her photos are so important to her, and because Michael had done such a great job on the engagement photos, she knew the wedding photos would be fantastic. Luckily Michael was still available, and the result is the beautiful post I’m sharing with you today. It’s not only the images that he was able to capture, but also the gorgeous professional album that LeAnne and Brody will enjoy that they will have from their experience with a professional photographer.

So let’s get to some pictures, shall we?

These little angel pins are a cute touch to the bouquets. I love that we get to see details from the wedding that others may not notice during the day.

It’s always exciting for me to go through the images that Michael captures from weddings that he does without me – I wasn’t part of the day, but I can feel every moment as I scroll through the photos. I love this one.

Um yeah, that’s a Ferrari.

A sweet moment with Brody and his mom caught by our second shooter Christy who took pictures of the groom’s side getting ready.

A great candid of LeAnne arriving to the ceremony at Bethel Lutheran Church.

LeAnne’s dad was very emotional walking her down the aisle. I burst into tears when I saw these images, thinking of my own dad and how proud he was to be at my wedding, and how lucky I was to have him walk me down the aisle. That, and the pregnancy hormones probably don’t help (for those of you who don’t know – our second little one is on the way in January! That little tidbit is a reward for those of you who thoroughly read my long stories…)

I don’t usually choose bridal party photos to post on the blog, but I had to share this one. So beautiful!

And, of course, fun times with the guys.

LeAnne & Brody. So happy to be Mr. & Mrs.

The ceremony at the Westin was filled of crazy kissing games, and wild dancing.

LeAnne & Brody, thank you for choosing us for your journey, congratulations!

Our poor neglected blog….we’re shooting faster than we can blog these days, but I’m hoping we’ll catch up soon.

Michael and Christy were on hand for Gurpreet & Param’s wedding earlier this month.

The celebrations started the week earlier with an engagement ceremony and sangeet. Check out Param’s shoes – sweet!

On the wedding day, even Gurpreet was helping everyone get ready.

The ceremony was at the beautiful Gurdwara Singh Sabha.

It’s always a very calm time when we finally get the couple alone on the wedding day. They have been surrounded by friends and family for days, and the stress just falls away while we hang out with them.

Param decided to have a run at the door at the doli – I love this shot Christy grabbed of him!

But no luck, he still had to negotiate his way in.

Both Christy and Michael captured amazing images of the doli.

This shot of Michael’s is especially emotional.

Gurpreet & Param were a very ambitious couple – they had their ceremony and reception on the same day!  For many East Indian weddings the bride is up at 4 or 5 am getting ready, and couples tend to have the reception the following day.  It was a very long day for everyone, but the party at the Delta was fantastic and Gurpreet & Param partied long into the night.

Look at this fantastic cake!  It was made by Kinnickinnick Bakery. (It’s gluten free!)

And, as usual, Michael got in on the action.  That’s my crazy dancing husband, always the life of the party.  There always seems to be someone wanting a picture with him.

Danae & Eric had an elegant wedding at the Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Spruce Grove.

Danae is stunning, and has a wonderful gift – she is able to have tears in her eyes and still look absolutely beautiful.

The ceremony was very focused on family. Eric’s brother, Brother Colin, even helped to conduct the ceremony. Eric’s family in particular is very musical, and his sisters have incredible voices. It was a beautiful ceremony to be a part of.

We have to give all the credit to Danae for scouting out locations for photos after the wedding. She found a few favourite locations and even talked with a local farmer before the wedding to ask to use his farm. Thanks for making our job so easy Danae!

Congratulations you two!

So you might notice that it’s been a bit quiet on the blog lately. If you think that means we’ve been super busy, you’re right! In the past little while we’ve moved into our new studio, jetted to Mexico for a fabulous destination wedding, built a playyard in our backyard for Andrew, and had tons of photo shoots. All of this is coming your way soon, and I’ll leave you with a peek at Stephanie & Branden’s Mayan Riviera wedding – much more is on the way soon, I promise!

Edmonton destination wedding photographers

I’m so excited to have an article we wrote featured on the Professional Photographers of Canada blog!

For anyone who hasn’t read it yet, here is the whole article.  It’s full of great tips for budgeting for your dream wedding photographer.

One of the biggest decisions that every bride faces is how to budget for her big day. Websites and magazines provide checklists to help you allocate your budget for all of the details of your wedding, large and small. Every one of your friends who just got married will also be more than happy to give you wedding planning advice.

While these budgets can be a great place to start, nothing is set in stone, and you have to decide what is most important for YOUR wedding. For many brides, photography is THE most important thing for their wedding. All of the details of your wedding are important, but your photos are the only permanent record of your wedding day. Here are a few tips to help ensure you have budgeted enough for your wedding photography.

Do I need a professional?

My uncle can do it for me. These days anyone with a camera thinks that they are a photographer, but a professional has the experience, equipment, personality, and backup equipment to ensure that your photos are stunning and safeguarded.

    How much is too much?

A few years ago, you could hire a great wedding photographer for $2000-$3000. These days, people are spending more on their photographer, and it’s not unusual to pay $5000+ for an amazing professional photographer for full day coverage with an album and disc. Why is it ‘so expensive’? There is a difference between amazing photography and poor photography. The talent of a true professional photographer can be the difference between ho-hum photos and stunning images of your most important day. Wedding photography is one field where you do get what you pay for.

How much coverage do I need?

Gone are the days of stiff portraits after a traditional ceremony. Many brides now want documentary-style coverage of their wedding. However, not everyone wants photos of getting ready. Or, your budget might not allow for hiring a pro for the whole day. Rather than hiring a mediocre photographer for the whole day, consider spending a bit extra and hiring a professional for less time.

Do I get a disc of images?

To some brides a disc is important, to some it is not. If you are a bride who values having a digital archive of your photos and the ability to print what you want, check to see if the disc is included, or if there is an extra charge. If the initial package price is low but there are fees after the fact, this may affect how a photographer will fit into your budget. Also, understand that there is a difference between a disc of high-resolution files that you can print to a large size, or downsized files (or low resolution) that can only be used for the web or small prints.

Do I need a wedding album?

You may have intentions of printing off wedding photos for your friends and family, or putting together your own wedding album. However, many brides find that after the wedding life gets busy, priorities shift, and the disc of wedding images gets put on the shelf. Also, technologies change and that disc will eventually be obsolete or may deteriorate. A good quality album will safeguard your memories for years. You should ensure your budget has enough room for a professional wedding album.

Can I personalize my wedding with photography?

You can combine other items from your budget, such as a guest book, thank you cards, and even invitations into your photography budget. Ask your photographer to do custom extras with your engagement and wedding photos.

Shouldn’t I get a discount for getting married on a Sunday or in the winter?

A photographer works just as hard on a Saturday in the summer as on a Sunday in December. You shouldn’t necessarily expect a discount if you’re not getting married on a Saturday.

                Hi everyone,

We’ve just returned from an amazing relaxing 10 days in Phoenix. Sigh. It was a great way to recharge our batteries and prep for an incredibly busy time meeting with new clients.

Of course, we can’t go anywhere without a camera (or can we? More on that later…) so Michael met up with the incredible Justine Miller from Phoenix to second with her on an engagement shoot with Jenna & Marc (you can see Justine’s blog post of them here).

Here are some of the shots Michael nabbed during the shoot.  Hot!!

And here’s Justine working her magic.

Speaking of magic, we went on the craziest road trip ever.  It all started with a cold.  Andrew had the sniffles and he fell asleep in the car while we were driving to the science center.  We decided to keep driving and let him have a good nap.  Well, 6 hours later we found ourselves in Disneyland!  Here’s an iPhone snap of  the wind farms in California.

We had nothing with us. No change of clothes, toiletries….camera….  (Now don’t worry, we had plenty of clothes and diapers for Andrew.  At least one of us was prepared!).  It was the most spontaneous thing we have done in a long time.  We picked up a little Canon from Target, spent the night at a Best Western, and took in Disneyland the next day.  It was amazing!  It was raining a bit, and so Disneyland was absolutely dead.  There were no lines, and we walked right on to every ride.  Andrew loved the rides.  He would cry when we got off the rides, try to squeeze through barriers to get to more rides, and kept saying ‘ride?, ride?’. We left when Andrew was ready for bed, and drove all night back to Phoenix.

The whole trip was so surreal, and it was a great break from my normal sensible, organized, well-thought-out self.  And that’s the story of Andrew’s first trip to Disneyland!  Here are a few snapshots.

To cap off the trip, we had a celebrity sighting in the Phoenix airport!  This is Michael and Andrew with Nick Stahl, the star of the HBO series Carnivale (sadly, I was watching the luggage at the time, so didn’t get to meet him).  For anyone who hasn’t watched this show, I suggest renting it.  It was a short-lived series, but like any HBO series, immaculately produced. (And yes, it’s super blurry, Nick’s wife took it on our iPhone – thanks!).

Joanne & Colin travelled from Lethbridge to find some nice white snow for their engagement photos. They are SO cute together! I love the nod to the Olympics – I need to get a pair of those gloves! Next time we see these two it will be much warmer, so look for their wedding this summer! Thanks you two for braving the cold with us.

Dayna and Ryan are an absolutely beautiful couple.  They have a really cool story – they met when they were babies, and it was really neat to see in their slideshow photos of them together as infants. They have been married for 2 years already, but I felt the same excitement and anticipation from them as they saw each other at opposite ends of the aisle as I would from any newlyweds.  They held a wedding ceremony here in Edmonton (they live in Washington state) for the family and friends here who wanted to celebrate with them.  The stunning wedding was held at the Hotel MacDonald.

This one is our assistant Brendan’s photo.

See?  Absolute excitement on Dayna’s face.  Love it.

Ryan is in the Coast Guard in Washington, and was very handsome in his uniform.

                Seriously hot couple!

I’ve never seen such an enthusiastic toast.

Flowers by La Piazza Dasee (we love them!) and cake by Deliciously Different Cakes.

Dayna’s dress suited her so well.  Incredibly fashionable for a gorgeous bride.

                This is Brendan’s photo.

Congratulations Dayna & Ryan. Thank you for choosing us to celebrate with you. If we’re ever in Port Angeles we’ll come visit!
