Kristine is vibrant and determined, Sean is a little more quiet.  After many years together, their dream wedding came together at the Art Gallery of Alberta.  After two engagement sessions together I was really looking forward to photographing these two – they are easy going, and happy to follow my suggestions for where to go for photos (including traipsing through some super tall grass bustling with mosquitoes!).  Their small bridal party (just maid of honour Erin and best man Ian) were so fantastic, and we had a relaxed day.

Congratulations Kristine & Sean!

So…apparently Sean never actually proposed.  I have to say this was a first, witnessing a marriage proposal AFTER the wedding!

There were some technical difficulties with the cake, the Art Gallery staff did an awesome job in helping make sure Kristine & Sean still had a beautiful cake to cut. Talk about going the extra mile!

Big thanks to Bruce & Jesse for all their hard work!  Jesse proved some special talents by photographing while the maid of honour sat on him…and luckily Bruce knows how to pin boutonnieres!

From the first meeting that I had with Kristyn and Joel I knew that their wedding would be a great time. They were naturally chilled out sitting on the couch in our studio and we hit it off immediatly. Their wedding ceremony was a chance for family to gather under the big tree on a hot and sunny day at the beautiful Devonian Gardens

Kristyn and Joel’s reception was a fun filled event. Much of the family had come from out of town. I experienced my first bun tossing. The family started a tradition last year at Joel’s sister’s wedding whereby they throw buns at each-other. I have to admit, it was pretty fun. I got a couple of buns thrown at me and even got a sneak-attack in at one of the guests at my table.

Thank you to me second shooter Tessa, I had a great day working with you in the sweltering sun. And a special thank you to Kim who assisted us on the day.

Angela & Ryan are just plain awesome.  They’re both classy and sophisticated, but certainly know how to have a good time. Their bridal party is like a close-knit family, and from the sounds of it can be found at Angela & Ryan’s on any given weekend watching football.  We started off the day with a small traditional Chinese tea ceremony at Angela & Ryan’s home. The team at Elegant Touches helped them to put on a beautiful ceremony and reception at the Matrix Hotel downtown.  The bride’s friend Amy did ALL the girls’ hair and makeup (they looked amazing!), and florals are by Laurel’s.

I’m going to open up a little bit here – there was a portion of the wedding that I was dreading.  Angela’s mom passed away last spring, and they scheduled some time during the day to visit her grave.  I completely understand why, and I think it’s a fantastic way to incorporate Angela’s mom into the wedding, but I was worried about how I would handle it, having lost my own father almost 5 years ago.  I tried to keep it together, after all this moment was about Angela and her mom, and not about me and my dad. In the end I just let the tears pour down my face as I was shooting.  They’re welling up now as I’m writing this.  Grief over the loss of a parent is something that has connected me to a few of my clients and friends, and I feel absolutely honoured to have been a part of the ceremony with Angela’s mom.  Going to the cemetery was important, and I hope our photos will serve as a reminder of how much Angela’s mom was missed, loved, and thought of on their wedding day.  Very special thanks to Angela & Ryan for their understanding (and hugs) as I struggled a little bit at that moment, and to Sam for helping me along the way.

The groomsmen and MC’s wrote and performed an incredible rendition of Iggy Azalea’s Fancy dedicated to Ryan and Angela (mostly making fun of Ryan though).  We’re NOT videographers, but Sam recorded the whole thing and you can see it here (seriously impressive guys!)

Allison & Brandon had a small wedding surrounded by those closest to them. We always feel so honoured when couples choose to hire us for smaller weddings. We know the amount of time, energy, money, and organization that goes into any wedding, and when couples choose to have an intimate wedding and really value photography, we always appreciate it so much.  No matter the size of the wedding, photography is important!  They had a beautiful ceremony at St. Theresa’s Catholic Church, and headed to the river valley with Michael for photos.  I love Allison’s beautiful lace dress, perfect for a hot summer wedding!

What a day! While Michael was with Tifanie and her beautiful bridesmaids getting ready, Melissa’s morning was full of laughs. The guys at this wedding are off-the-hook hilarious! The morning games had some of the craziest challenges we’ve seen yet.   Hanson and his groomsmen got very up close and personal with each other…

The ceremony at McDougall United Church was very heartfelt, and the reception at Sutton Place Hotel had some crazy dance moves! Tifanie and Hanson are a wonderful couple and their family made Michael and Melissa feel so welcome for the day. Congratulations!

The gorgeous Nina helped Tifanie get glam for the wedding.

Behind the scenes with Michael & Melissa!

Roxy is a memorable bride for me for many reasons.

- They got married on their 5th anniversary of being together

- She first emailed me two full years before her wedding

- She has an amazingly warm and bubbly personality

- I got my first ever cop-pulled-me-over speeding ticket on my way to book her, and was subsequently late. I cried. (SUPER embarrassing).

Roxy & Jonathan’s wedding was the official kick-off to my crazy summer wedding season, and it couldn’t have been better. They welcomed Sam and I into their wedding like family, and we had a blast together.  Their ceremony was filled with genuine laughter and tears – it was really awesome to hear their love story shine through.

We had the unique opportunity to shoot in her amazing florist’s studio (faBLOOMosity) in the Mercer building downtown, and ran into a random with a cool motorcycle just outside.  Sometimes planning out photos works, sometimes the best ones are the ones you just stumble upon!  And sometimes…you just have to run out into traffic to get what you want.

This was Roxy’s dream – she had seen a photo for inspiration, and really wanted to capture their first kiss with all their friends and family looking on. Since I’m practically a midget, all credit goes to Sam for stepping up (literally) and nailing this one for Roxy & Jonathan!

Michael will be photographing Courtney & Jeff’s wedding next year, and here is what he had to say about their engagement session:

“I love it when clients put their complete trust in me to not only shoot their pictures, but to also choose where to take them. It was a nice surprise that when we went to this parkade to take pictures, there was also some construction material hanging around that made for some unique backdrops. I can’t wait to work with them again next year!”

I had the pleasure of shooting Tracy & Andrew’s wedding with my second shooter Melissa.  Surrounded by friends and family, in their church, and with love in their hearts, they devoted their lives to each other. Tracy’s sons were a pleasure to hang out with, and it was so clear from everyone who attended the wedding how much support Tracy & Andrew have as they start this next chapter of their lives together.  We lucked out with warm spring weather (a stark contrast from the spring snow storm we’re experiencing right now!) and the whole day was wonderful.

I (Haley) started my 2014 wedding season with a beautiful intimate wedding at the First Presbyterian Church in downtown Edmonton.  It’s always inspiring to shoot in a new location, and this beautiful old church gave me a lot of warm nooks and crannies to work with. I hadn’t met Jenny & Jordan prior to the wedding, but we had such a great time and I wish them all the best in their new life together!  I also welcomed a new second shooter (Kelsey) to our team and I’m excited to have her on board with us this year.

Usually Michael does most of our retouching, but all of the photos in this post were edited by me – I’ve been cultivating a fascination with Photoshop recently and picking up a few new tricks!
