Welcome to the new look of Shandro Photo! We saved this amazing photo shoot for the launch of our new brand. We’ve worked really hard over the last several months to create a fresh new look for our company. We absolutely love what we do, and are so excited about the change.

I can’t say enough wonderful things about Stephanie & David, who are still on their 2 month Australian honeymoon (jealous!) Stephanie & David planned a day-after session when they first met with us about their wedding photography.  Stephanie knew she wanted to do something extraordinary, and we knew just the spot. They have been waiting to see these photos – we didn’t show them anything in the back of the camera during the shoot, and we saved them for the blog launch – so I know they’ll be excited to see them!  I’m going to let these images speak for themselves – I get goosebumps every time I look at them.

This amazing image it is officially my favourite image of the year – we have a huge canvas of it in our gallery.

This one is inspired by John Michael Cooper.

We promised Melissa & Sean that we would have a few photos up for them before they leave on their honeymoon. This was particularly important for us to do as they are leaving shortly on a 6 month honeymoon/volunteering mission through Europe and Africa! We don’t know when they’ll have reliable internet access so we wanted them to see these images before they left.

Melissa & Sean are both lawyers, they met at a Ukrainian New Year’s Eve party after some friends set them up because of their mutual interests, and it was love at first sight. They even have video evidence of the first time they met – how many couples have something as cool as that?

A special thanks to Julianne from A Modern Proposal for helping make sure the day ran smoothly!

We had a ton of fun with Melissa and her girls getting ready.

I love this one – Melissa & Sean had the cutest flower girls ever!

Melissa & Sean were married in the Hawrelak Park Amphitheatre – it isn’t available for very many dates during the year, and Melissa & Sean were lucky enough to get one of those dates. The location was particularly important to them – Melissa & Sean have a profound dedication to the environment and Hawrelak Park holds a lot of memories for them enjoying nature. Melissa’s amazing dress is from a sustainable designer in the US, and we admire her dedication to the world we live in.

My favourite part of the ceremony was when Shawn promised they would ’grow wrinkly together’.

This is a shot from one of our assistants, Brendan:

Remember the song at the end of Ferris Bueller’s Day Off? ‘Oh Yeah’…. That’s what they walked down the aisle to. There were so many little touches to this wedding where their personalities shone through.

See what I mean? So adorable.

This staircase in Hawrelak Park is ‘their’ staircase. It was so special to do photos for them there.

Another location with a lot of meaning for them is the University of Alberta Law Centre, where they spent many, many hours studying together.

The reception was full of fun, including ‘Pin the Kubasa on the Perogy’. This guy…ummm…well, he missed.

Melissa & Sean’s first dance was AWESOME. A beautiful first dance, and then a rockin’ choreographed dance to ‘My Humps’ by the Black Eyed Peas! Not something you see at a typical wedding!

Melissa & Sean – it’ll be quite some time before we see each other again. We know you’ll have an incredible adventure over the next 6 months and we can’t wait to hear about everything you’ve accomplished when you return.

We are returning to Bridal Expo this year (September 27th – next weekend!), and our booth is going to be something to see!  We have a new sample album, new wall art, and some awesome surprises and prizes.  Anyone who stalks our blog closely (I know there are a lot of you out there!) will have seen a sneak peek of what we have coming up – it’s just the beginning.

This is going to be a rare post without a photo because I don’t want to give too much away – just visit us at Bridal Expo on September 27th at the Shaw Conference Center, and make sure to visit our blog and/or the website on September 27th to find out what the big news is!  You’re going to love it.

I promised you more of Neha & Sumit, and here they are!

Prior to the wedding, Neha had many ceremonies with her family, including the sangeet, mehendi, and churda.

Neha is an incredible dancer, you’d have to see her to believe it. I was stunned by the surprise dance she did at the sangeet.

Neha was so relaxed during the days leading up to the wedding. Definitely a bride-chilla.

This was our first Hindu wedding, and we enjoyed learning about all of the ceremonies. The various items at the ceremonies all have special meaning:

Fire – the element that dispels darkness
Water – life nourishing element
River – dispeller of evil spirits
Coconut – fertility
Sandhur – auspiciousness

Following the chura ceremony, the family had a discussion with the priest – while my Hindi isn’t that good, I was able to pick out a few topics, and it was very interesting. One of the most thought provoking was the idea that nothing can ever be destroyed; everything goes back into the earth.

This wedding was a bit different for us – it was mostly documentary, with not very much time for any posed/formal photos. I love the results…as much as we love being creative with our portraits, it was cool to challenge ourselves with catching moments, even more so than usual. I wouldn’t say it is a shift in our style, but it was an amazing experience.

That being said, we of course got some sweet shots of the two of them…

Check out her dimples!

I had not met Sumit before the wedding – Michael did their engagement session, and Sumit hadn’t been at any of the pre-wedding ceremonies in Edmonton. My first time meeting him was here (wow!):

The Barat was quite long, and Sumit had a nice ride on the horse around the hotel with his family before being welcomed in.

At the ceremony, Neha & Sumit exchanged garlands of fresh flowers to declare their commitment to each other.

Neha was very emotional during the ceremony.

The reception was also at the Coast Edmonton East in Sherwood Park. Neha & Sumit enjoyed many speeches and performances; my favourite was this young man who was a very energetic dancer.

Neha thanked her brother in particular for being her unofficial wedding planner – I must say he did a fantastic job!

Dance time!

This is my favourite shot of the whole wedding.

Special thanks to Monica from Suhaag Weddings for helping ensure everything ran smoothly – it was great working with you again!

Neha & Sumit, we wish you all happiness as you being your new life together in Montreal. We hope to see you soon! Thank you for being so relaxed, and making our job so enjoyable.

We’re no strangers to different cultures, and visitors to our blog know how much we love East Indian weddings. Esther & Nathan gave us the opportunity to experience a Chinese wedding and we couldn’t have been more excited!

We had our first experience of the fun games played on the wedding morning. Nathan had to bargain with the bridesmaids to gain entry to the house and join Esther. Luckily, his groomsmen did some of the dirty work for him (Simon took the brunt of the punishment – we could see why Nathan chose him as best man!). Tasks included bringing coffee and snacks for the bridesmaids, jumping jacks, burpees, sharing an intimate moment with another groomsman (we’re not putting that one on the blog!), and wearing a lacy pink bra.

Once inside, Nathan had to guess which lip imprint on a piece of paper was his bride’s…

…and write her a rap song, professing his love. It was pretty good… “My name is Nathan and I’m here to say, I’m here to get Esther and take her away”!

A tea ceremony followed with Esther’s family.

Esther spent a lot of time on the U of A campus, and chose that as their portrait location.

The ceremony was at the Knox Metropolitan Church in Old Strathcona/Garneau.  It was really cool for Michael, because his parents got married in that church!  We had never been inside.  He could imagine his parents, decades ago, making the same commitment to each other that Esther and Nathan were making.  Michael’s parents are happily married with a growing family, and we wish Esther and Nathan such joy and longevity in their marriage.

The reception at the Sutton Place Hotel was incredible.  Easily the best food and service we have experienced all year.

These little dolls are so adorable!

Esther and Nathan did something really cool – they walked around to each and every table with their bridal party and parents to toast with all of the guests.  It was a special way for them to thank everyone for coming.

Another wedding with two dresses! Both of Esther’s were fantastic – I’m jealous again!

In celebration of the end of her diet, that she has faithfully followed in order to look her best at the wedding (which she did, wow!), Esther requested McDonald’s cheeseburgers for the midnight lunch at the wedding.  Every time I see this photo, I can hear Esther sighing in satisfaction – you made it, girl!

Thank you both so much for the incredible experience.  We can’t wait for our next Chinese wedding!

Jessica and Jeremy’s wedding was a joyous celebration of love, family, community, and faith. It was beautiful to see them celebrate their union amongst family and friends.

Jessica is awesome – the first bride I’ve seen playing video games before the ceremony! It was a very serious game of Wii Mario Kart….

The ceremony was held at the North Pointe Community Church. The church is incredibly beautiful, with awesome lighting, and tiered seating so everyone had a great view of the ceremony.

I was so lucky to see someone accidentally pop their streamers – I didn’t know this was going to happen! I quickly grabbed this candid shot.

We did a lot of the photos at Vanguard Bible College that Jessica, Jeremy, and several members of their bridal party attended. We had never been there, and we delighted to be able to use the rootop, with a great view of downtown Edmonton! We found a few wonderful locations in the college.

So, we had a bit of a mishap in the morning…um…my camera stopped working during the getting ready photos. Panic! We have backup equipment, but it was definitely a scary moment. We didn’t miss any shots, but did pick up a new 5D MII at the Kingsway McBain while driving in between locations. Jess & Jer helped us break it in!

Downtown was alive with The Works art festival. I love this shot – especially with the cops!

It was a really hot day, and Jessica and Jeremy surprised us by being up for jumping into the fountain at City Hall. We are so lucky to be able to work with such great clients as these two – they were amazing!

A quick Starbucks stop…

The reception was also held at North Pointe Community Church, and the transformation to a reception venue was awesome. The wonderful meal was catered by Accapella Catering.

Congratulations Jess & Jer – we had a fabulous time with you two. Can’t wait to see you and show you more of your photos!

I know you’re all waiting for photos from Rob and Lindsay’s wedding, and we can’t wait to post them! We’re working really hard to get them up, but we had to share one amazing image with you. More to come!

We have just returned from a wonderfully relaxing week in the Mayan Riviera. It was hot, hot, and hot, and we’re not sad at all to have missed the blizzard.

Here’s one of the 4 pools at our resort, which was huge. Jealous? You should be.

The resort beach was beautiful with white sand and warm water. We enjoyed a few sunrises.

We are going to be photographing Amita & Abheeshek’s awesome cruise wedding in December, with a stop in Cozumel, which was a mere ferry ride from our resort. Since we were in the area, we had to check it out. We had a fun snorkeling trip, and saw one of the cruise ships (will this be ours?) docked in Cozumel. Being there made us even more excited for their destination wedding.

Another tourist stop – Chichen Itza, the ancient Mayan archaeological site ranked as the 5th wonder of the modern world. Wow. This is El Castillo (pronounced cast-ee-yo), the massive central temple of the site. It was built for astronomical purposes, and represents the Mayan calendar.

We took Andrew with us and he loved Mexcio. Did I say loved? I meant LOVED. He loved the bananas, the pool, the beach, the heat, and the elevator in the lobby. I’ve been chronicling Andrew’s life each month in photos, and his 8 month photos were on the beach. Here’s one of my favourites.

We’re back in action and hard at work. Don’t forget, we’re mere hours away from our unveiling!!! Our new project will be revealed MAY 1st at 9 AM. Keep your eyes on the blog!

Renu and Gurjeet are getting married so soon, less than half a month to go! We met up with them pre-blizzard on Whyte Ave. Renu & Gurjeet love hanging out together shopping, going for dinner, and generally looking fabulous. We found some fun and edgy locations around Whyte Ave to showcase their exceptional fashion sense and incredible connection.

Beautiful natural light streaming through the window.

Bam!

No prompting, this was all Gurjeet. That’s real love.

Spending time with these two made us so excited for their wedding photography. They were vivacious, and in the moment. We had a great time!
