Sarah was one of those brides that knew from the start that she was going to hire me, and her wedding to Matt was one that I was really excited for this summer!  They had their struggles along the way including their chosen venue (the Edmonton Petroleum Club) closing its doors, but I can honestly say it was for the best because their ‘new’ venue, Northlands Expo Centre, was perfect. It was my first time shooting there, and I really liked the open feel and the modern colours and architecture.

Ever since we went down to Canmore for their engagement session, I knew these two would be up for whatever we wanted to do for photos. There are so many great little spots around the University of Alberta that were perfect for their wedding.  I had them climbing through water features, and roaming the halls of dark chemistry buildings, they didn’t mind the rain, and their entire bridal party was a total blast.

A couple of days after the wedding I got a message from one of the bridesmaids asking to meet to talk about her own wedding photography! When we got together she told me that a lot of the guests at the wedding thought that me and my second shooter Bruce were actually just family members!  I take that a a HUGE compliment, I love that we were able to have such a great connection with everyone at the wedding.  And I’ll look forward to seeing some of the same people at her wedding next summer!!

OK, on to pictures of a friendly dalmatian, fabulous veil, and one of the sweetest couples ever.  Matt & Sarah, thanks for being thoroughly fantastic!

Sarah told me she specifically bought a cathedral veil so that I could take some ‘epic’ photos of it…what do you think? How did I do?

This is a completely candid moment – as Sarah & Matt exited the ceremony they had a quiet moment while everyone filed out…it was completely as if the rest of the world melted away.  They LOVE each other and it all came together just beautifully.

Bruce and I had a fantastic time.  He continued his ongoing love affair with the lightstand, I got down on the ground as usual, helped to bustle Sarah’s dress…just another fun day for Team Shandro! I LOVE that Sarah has followed our hashtag #teamshandro on social media, and even included that on the seating chart.

Honourable mention to the groomsmen for being total goofballs, but not in the ‘we’re 5 and can’t pay attention’ kind of way =) I feel the need to point out that they came up with this pose on their own.

High school sweethearts Amy and Scott are a wonderful couple. I took their photos, along with their son Connor, in the winter last year, and this year I got to shoot their wedding at the Citadel Theatre!

They got ready at The Matrix Hotel downtown. Amy was busy in the morning, sewing by hand a bracelet to go with her wedding attire. In the end she had a little help from friends to get it all done on time. It was good that she kept herself busy to calm the nerves. While Scott was getting ready, he was anxious and excited. It’s great that they had Connor there to help calm HIS nerves!

I had never been to Edmonton’s own Yellowhead Brewery, so I couldn’t wait to shoot their reception there. The atmosphere and the food at the brewery is incredible, and we were able to take some great twilight pictures on the brewery floor. All of the love around the brewery must result in better beer. It had been awhile since I had shot a wedding with Melissa, and I was happy to get to spend the day with her.

I hadn’t met Alessa until about a month before she married Brad and I met Brad on their wedding day, and they were so easy to photograph and so clearly in love that we just dove right in. We had an absolutely fabulous day together! It turns out I also knew the MC and one of the guests from my former life as a scientist as well! I love how small this world is.

Alessa & Brad easily complement each other, and their busy lives are taking them all over the world including a move to the UK. They’re sure to brighten any new place they visit with their warm personalities. St. Joseph’s Basilica was a perfect backdrop for this elegant wedding and I adore the classic look that Alessa & Brad chose.

Thanks to Melissa and new Team Shandro member Christine for working with me on this one!

Pinch me. Honestly.  I just got home from a trip to Vancouver, and thought about all the traveling I have done in the last few years. It’s a great joy in my life to get to explore the world, and I’m so incredibly lucky to have the flexibility with my career to take vacations and work in different places.  I’ve never had a bucket list, but I have a travel wish list I’ll never get through in a lifetime.  I’ve fallen so deeply in love with Hawaii that I’ll be back there twice more before wedding season hits!

The opportunity to shoot Grace & Yang on the stunning island of Kauai was fantastic.  They brought me to one of my favourite places in the world, how could I say no!  Instead of just shooting on one day, I twisted their arm to let me shoot them twice (I was just a bit excited) and we explored both the South shore of Kauai at Shipwreck Beach and also the North shore at Hanalei Bay and the Napali Coast.  We had some fantastic meals together as well, and a LOT of fun hanging out.  I absolutely adore these two.

I’m going to put the behind-the-scenes first this time – thanks to Michael for coming with me to assist.

I have been looking forward to Courtney and Jeff’s wedding since the spring. When I shot Courtney and Jeff’s engagement everything was just so easy. They looked great, we got along great, the chemistry was evident, and the pictures showed it. I couldn’t wait to make more images of them. They are a gorgeous couple, don’t you agree?

In the days leading up to the wedding, Edmonton experienced unseasonably warm weather. The mercury hit the double digits and much of the snow melted. Courtney had been hoping for a snowy winter wedding, and the day before the wedding it got cold and it snowed on her wedding day!

The ceremony and reception were both held in the Wedgewood room at the Edmonton Fairmont Hotel Macdonald. The team at FaBLOOMosity did an incredible job with the flowers.

Behind the scenes with Michael & Bruce!

I got to go and take engagement photos of Karissa and Logan during the great January heat wave of 2015. Their wedding is going to be in a rural setting, so we did the opposite for their engagement photos and took them downtown. We had a lot of fun. It was like hanging out with old friends. I can’t wait to travel to Lac La Biche for the wedding this summer.

Yang proposed to Grace in Banff so it was an obvious choice for them to have Banff engagement photos!  Despite some chilly and windy conditions, we had a wonderful time exploring the beautiful natural areas around the town of Banff.  This sweet couple was up for anything including hiking up a hill in heeled boots (Grace, not Yang of course…) and snuggling in the snow.  I can’t wait for our next shoot together!

I’ve been struggling to find the words to adequately describe my experience with Kathy & Luc’s elopement (and if you know me you’ll realize I’m rarely at a loss for words!)  The best way that I can explain how it felt is to say that this wedding more than any other made me feel like an artist.  It brought into perspective exactly why I do what I do, and that there is creativity in me that is dying to get out.  I’ll never be able to thank Kathy enough for giving me this opportunity.

Here’s the story (it’s a long one!).  Kathy was a makeup artist for a wedding we shot 3 years ago, and has followed us since then.  She and Luc have been together for several years and have 2 sons together. They decided to make it official, and she emailed me to ask about photographing their elopement. She said “Compared to the other weddings you photograph I know there wouldn’t be a lot of details, so I’m sure it would be quite the challenge. I am sure you book up super fast, so the date is really not an issue. It could be later this summer, it could be later next summer…It could be a Monday morning, or a Tuesday evening. It really does not matter to me what the day/date is. If this is something you would consider, I would love to hear your feedback on great locations, what the best time of day would be (we’re thinking somewhere outside downtown at dusk?)”

Talk about a dream! I get to pick the date/time/location of a wedding? That’s amazing for any wedding photographer – we often struggle with lighting and distracting elements in locations, but we don’t have control over it.  My inner control freak started to grin.  Then my mind went into overdrive.

For a few years I’ve had a crazy dream of getting the best wedding vendors in Edmonton together and throwing a wedding – letting each vendor work their magic and have total creative freedom, and working together to create a surprise wedding for a couple.  Kathy & Luc’s wedding was the perfect opportunity for me to make this dream a reality, and Kathy was so open to letting me plan things.  While it seemed like a fantastic idea, the week before the wedding I really started to panic. What if she and Luc didn’t like what I had put together?  The only thing that they were choosing was what they were going to wear and a general colour scheme.

After Kathy, her sister, and I rolled tree stumps down into the ravine the day of the wedding, Kathy gave me a gift. A beautiful Tiffany necklace that I wear almost daily. We hadn’t spent a lot of time together but I cherish this gift – she knew it was something I would love. And when she finally saw the ceremony location in person I knew she was going to love everything I had put together. I am by no means a wedding planner, but I’m really proud of how this all came together.  Most importantly, Kathy & Luc had a personal, emotional, and meaningful wedding.

So now I’ll let the photos speak for themselves.  Here is my AMAZING team of vendors, and huge thanks to Kelsey for second shooting and helping me with setup, and Venessa for helping with set up as well.   See more in our feature on Swooned Magazine.

What a day. Anne and George’s wedding was held one day before the first big snowflakes of the winter descended upon Edmonton. From the pictures you would never know that it is cold. We spend most of our time in the lush forests in the Muttart Conservatory.

George adores Anne and she was so happy all day. The speeches from family and friends painted a picture of Anne as a woman with a great heart who is willing to do anything to help others. George was spoken of as a man who strongly believes in family and his family has welcomed Anne into their home many times.

Congratulations Anne and George!
