I was first introduced to Coleen & Glenn through their niece/wedding planner Jolene, and I remember from our first meeting being really excited for their wedding.  Coleen & Glenn have found a beautiful love together a little bit later in life, and have now joined together along with her two daughters and his two sons to create a new family.  The wedding, although ‘low-key’ was absolutely gorgeous, with a lot of special details, and nothing left unaccounted for.  Coleen & Glenn’s private lake property is a stunning retreat outside of the city and a remarkable location for their wedding.  Glenn poured a lot of hard work into making sure the grounds of the property were immaculate, and it was a pleasure to shoot there.

We were lucky enough to have the chance to do most of the portraits prior to the ceremony because the skies opened up a little bit!  To Coleen & Glenn’s credit, they didn’t let it faze them, and went ahead with their outdoor ceremony on the dock of their lake. Nothing a few umbrellas couldn’t fix!  Then guests were treated to an intimate tented reception with mouth-watering BBQ.  Coleen & Glenn threw a fantastic party, and it was really cool to see their children and friends celebrating along with them.  The live band and the rustic decor created a truly magical and cozy atmosphere.

Thank you so much, Coleen & Glenn, for choosing me to celebrate your union with you, and thanks to Tessa for second shooting with me!

To quote one of the reception speeches, Kiran found the best thing that you could possibly find at Home Depot!

These two lovebirds met in the lumber aisle there, and the rest was history. I first met Kiran at her cousin Sam’s wedding last year, and after she saw the photos she called me to shoot her wedding to Kyle! Kiran is the definition of a bubbly personality, and Kyle is the perfect complement to her.  He’s goofy, and constantly smiling.  They were just a delight to work with.

Unfortunately I was already booked for the first of the two wedding days, but luckily we have an amazing team, and Melissa stepped in as an associate shooter for us to shoot the ceremony day (with awesome second shooter Grace!).  The girls did an amazing job, and we’re looking forward to expanding the team to having some more associate shooters in the future!

This wedding was all about family and friends, and Kiran and Kyle have a HUGE group of supporters who are overjoyed about their marriage.  The joining of these two families was a really cool thing to experience.

Jasman and Rajveer have a great energy together. Usually I try to keep my couples at ease during their photo shoot, especially if it is their first time in front of the camera.  These two were totally easy going! They wanted pictures in a natural setting, so I took them to the ravine that I regularly walk through. It was a bit more “natural” than they had bargained for (we came across a few ants), but they took it in stride and we get some great pictures. Stay tuned for their wedding pictures in the coming weeks!

Kaila and Peter are both teachers. They wanted their wedding to reflect that. There was a lot of work put into the details at the ceremony and the reception. The theme flowed through the stacks of books lining the aisles at the church, to the custom embossed pencils with their name and wedding date, to the book stacks on each table.

Kaila and Peter were easy going and relaxed on the wedding day. Any students who get either of them as teachers are lucky. Their wedding was elaborate, but it went off without a hitch, thanks in no small part to Jennifer Kinal of Fresh Look Event Management.

Kim & Kyle’s wedding fell on one of the hottest days of the summer! Ever since their engagement session with me last fall, I knew that their wedding was going to be romantic and relaxed.  There were a few familiar faces at this wedding as well, which always makes me feel right at home!  My awesome second shooter Krista and I really had a fantastic time with Kim, Kyle, and their whole bridal party.  Pretty much everyone had K in their name, in fact the bridal party was mostly made up of Kyles!

Those of you who know me may know that I’m don’t consider myself to be a particularly religious person.  My faith is something that I have questioned and explored, and I can’t say that I’ve come up with a definitive answer on what I believe in.  I joke that I go to church every weekend, I just go to a different one, and mostly on Saturdays!  I’ve had the unique opportunity to experience all different types of religions and faiths on this job, and see a lot of different wedding ceremonies.  Kim and Kyle’s wedding ceremony was at the Edmonton Moravian Church, and it was my first time there. What I loved about their ceremony was how personal it was.  I always appreciate when I go to a ceremony that is very focused on who the bride and groom are as a couple, and how their faith, family, and community has contributed to their relationship.  Their ceremony in particular just felt so warm and happy!  Despite the crazy heat, it was really enjoyable to experience and there were lots of laughs.

My warmest congratulations to Kim & Kyle, you two are so sweet together and it was a pleasure to be a part of your wedding!

Behind the scenes with me and Krista!

Sarah was one of those brides that knew from the start that she was going to hire me, and her wedding to Matt was one that I was really excited for this summer!  They had their struggles along the way including their chosen venue (the Edmonton Petroleum Club) closing its doors, but I can honestly say it was for the best because their ‘new’ venue, Northlands Expo Centre, was perfect. It was my first time shooting there, and I really liked the open feel and the modern colours and architecture.

Ever since we went down to Canmore for their engagement session, I knew these two would be up for whatever we wanted to do for photos. There are so many great little spots around the University of Alberta that were perfect for their wedding.  I had them climbing through water features, and roaming the halls of dark chemistry buildings, they didn’t mind the rain, and their entire bridal party was a total blast.

A couple of days after the wedding I got a message from one of the bridesmaids asking to meet to talk about her own wedding photography! When we got together she told me that a lot of the guests at the wedding thought that me and my second shooter Bruce were actually just family members!  I take that a a HUGE compliment, I love that we were able to have such a great connection with everyone at the wedding.  And I’ll look forward to seeing some of the same people at her wedding next summer!!

OK, on to pictures of a friendly dalmatian, fabulous veil, and one of the sweetest couples ever.  Matt & Sarah, thanks for being thoroughly fantastic!

This is a completely candid moment – as Sarah & Matt exited the ceremony they had a quiet moment while everyone filed out…it was completely as if the rest of the world melted away.  They LOVE each other and it all came together just beautifully.

Bruce and I had a fantastic time.  He continued his ongoing love affair with the lightstand, I got down on the ground as usual, helped to bustle Sarah’s dress…just another fun day for Team Shandro! I LOVE that Sarah has followed our hashtag #teamshandro on social media, and even included that on the seating chart.

Honourable mention to the groomsmen for being total goofballs, but not in the ‘we’re 5 and can’t pay attention’ kind of way =) I feel the need to point out that they came up with this pose on their own.

High school sweethearts Amy and Scott are a wonderful couple. I took their photos, along with their son Connor, in the winter last year, and this year I got to shoot their wedding at the Citadel Theatre!

They got ready at The Matrix Hotel downtown. Amy was busy in the morning, sewing by hand a bracelet to go with her wedding attire. In the end she had a little help from friends to get it all done on time. It was good that she kept herself busy to calm the nerves. While Scott was getting ready, he was anxious and excited. It’s great that they had Connor there to help calm HIS nerves!

I had never been to Edmonton’s own Yellowhead Brewery, so I couldn’t wait to shoot their reception there. The atmosphere and the food at the brewery is incredible, and we were able to take some great twilight pictures on the brewery floor. All of the love around the brewery must result in better beer. It had been awhile since I had shot a wedding with Melissa, and I was happy to get to spend the day with her.

I hadn’t met Alessa until about a month before she married Brad and I met Brad on their wedding day, and they were so easy to photograph and so clearly in love that we just dove right in. We had an absolutely fabulous day together! It turns out I also knew the MC and one of the guests from my former life as a scientist as well! I love how small this world is.

Alessa & Brad easily complement each other, and their busy lives are taking them all over the world including a move to the UK. They’re sure to brighten any new place they visit with their warm personalities. St. Joseph’s Basilica was a perfect backdrop for this elegant wedding and I adore the classic look that Alessa & Brad chose.

Thanks to Melissa and new Team Shandro member Christine for working with me on this one!

Pinch me. Honestly.  I just got home from a trip to Vancouver, and thought about all the traveling I have done in the last few years. It’s a great joy in my life to get to explore the world, and I’m so incredibly lucky to have the flexibility with my career to take vacations and work in different places.  I’ve never had a bucket list, but I have a travel wish list I’ll never get through in a lifetime.  I’ve fallen so deeply in love with Hawaii that I’ll be back there twice more before wedding season hits!

The opportunity to shoot Grace & Yang on the stunning island of Kauai was fantastic.  They brought me to one of my favourite places in the world, how could I say no!  Instead of just shooting on one day, I twisted their arm to let me shoot them twice (I was just a bit excited) and we explored both the South shore of Kauai at Shipwreck Beach and also the North shore at Hanalei Bay and the Napali Coast.  We had some fantastic meals together as well, and a LOT of fun hanging out.  I absolutely adore these two.

I’m going to put the behind-the-scenes first this time – thanks to Michael for coming with me to assist.

I have been looking forward to Courtney and Jeff’s wedding since the spring. When I shot Courtney and Jeff’s engagement everything was just so easy. They looked great, we got along great, the chemistry was evident, and the pictures showed it. I couldn’t wait to make more images of them. They are a gorgeous couple, don’t you agree?

In the days leading up to the wedding, Edmonton experienced unseasonably warm weather. The mercury hit the double digits and much of the snow melted. Courtney had been hoping for a snowy winter wedding, and the day before the wedding it got cold and it snowed on her wedding day!

The ceremony and reception were both held in the Wedgewood room at the Edmonton Fairmont Hotel Macdonald. The team at FaBLOOMosity did an incredible job with the flowers.
